If you weren’t in church on Sunday or didn’t catch it online, you missed it. The Dove is a very relevant and timely series on the Holy Spirit. One of the ways you can understand the Holy Spirit, how the Spirit works and how the Spirit moves, is to understand what the Spirit is like, or likened to.
John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven like a dove and remain on him”(John 1:32). Luke adds, “and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove” (Luke 3:22). Each of the four Gospels record the same thing. They all describe the Spirit descending on Jesus like a dove.
God wants you to understand something very important and special about the person and nature of His Spirit. The first is that God’s Holy Spirit, like a dove, is looking for a place to rest. God wants to settle on your life, but he won’t rest on dead things, only living things. There is only one way to become alive today. It is through Jesus.
Another important aspect to understand is that doves are wild. They can’t be tamed. The Holy Spirit is not tame or domesticated. The Holy Spirit cannot be controlled. The Holy Spirit does not do your bidding. You must respond to the Holy Spirit. Make your life a resting place for God’s presence and turn away from any works of the flesh, or what the Bible calls sin. Make the decision to adjust your life to keep the Dove at your home.
