“Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” —Hebrews 13:15
The Thank Offering (Hebrew: Todah) was a voluntary offering given in the Old Testament as an expression of gratitude for God’s goodness, provision, protection, and deliverance. Unlike offerings associated with sin or guilt, the thank offering was a joyful response to God’s grace. The offering included a communal meal where family and friends shared together in celebration of what God had done. It was not about earning God’s favor but expressing appreciation for His faithfulness. In the New Testament, Jesus fulfills the sacrificial system. Rather than bringing animals and grain offerings, believers now offer spiritual sacrifices through praise, gratitude, generosity, and lives surrendered to God. The heart of the “todah” lives on as a lifestyle of thanksgiving centered on Christ.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” —1 Thessalonians 5:18
The thank offering teaches us that worship is not primarily about what we give to God but about our response to what He has already done for us. In Christ, we no longer bring sacrifices to obtain God’s favor; we live lives of gratitude because His favor has already been secured through the cross. As we offer continual praise, share generously with others, and remember Christ through Communion, we carry forward the heart of the “todah” as a people marked by thanksgiving, joy, and worship.
