From Lament to Ascent

There’s a lot of injustice in the world. There’s a lot of things that don’t seem right or make sense. For example, why does it seem like the wicked prosper? Not all who prosper are wicked, but there are many godless people who seem to prosper, at least in the earthly sense. The sun shines on the righteous and the unrighteous alike. What does this do to your faith? Believe it or not, this is not a new struggle. Comparing your misfortune to other’s fortunes is a trap, but it’s easy to do. David’s chief worship leader, Asaph, struggled with the same questions. He almost stumbled because of it. Instead, Asaph went from lament to ascent. He learned how to go from a pity party to worshiping God. He turned his rant into praise. Healthy, godly lament can lead you into the presence of God. Unhealthy lament can lead to your downfall. Your perspective makes all the difference!

I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.”
